Chicago police shoot man with a gun

A male suspect was wounded by a Chicago police officer early this morning at the end of a chase that ended on the Near West Side near the Eisenhower Expressway, police sources said.

The suspect was shot about 2:45 a.m. in the 400 block of South Leavitt Street, said Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman. She could not immediately confirm there was a chase.

Another police source said there was a chase that began to the south of where it ended. He said the suspect was wounded in the elbow, and that police recovered a .45-calibre handgun.

Fire Department paramedics transported one person with trauma from Van Buren Street and Leavitt to Stroger Hospital, said department spokesman Kevin MacGregor. His condition was not available.

No officers were injured, he said.
