It's quickly starting to appear that Newt flat-out blew it... along with the local GOP in NY-23 that saddled the district's majority-conservative voters with the unfortunate choice of having to abandon the Republican candidate to get anything like what they want.
Perhaps Gingrich was in a cave in North Korea or something when the TEA parties were raging across the country- he sure seems to have missed the message. It's simply astonishing that he jumped into supporting the ACORN-endorsed, pro-abortion, pro-stimulus, and pro-CARD CHECK Scozzafava with both feet like this -a big political gamble, and with little upside for Gingrich. Perhaps the explanation lies in his announcement of a possible Presidential run last week... and this former Contract-with-America conservative trailblazer has been reduced to a disengenuous RNC shill... trying to accumulate credits with those who control the party's 2012 cash spigot.
The Club for Growth poll yesterday showed the NY-23 congressional race now going decidedly against DIABLO (Democrat in All But Label Only) candidate Scozzafava, falling below 20% support, and into 3rd place... as outside Conservative challenger Doug Hoffman soars into the lead. Gingrich, having hooked his wagon to a dead -and apparently corrupt- horse, not only exhibited poor judgement and a lack of influence with the electorate... but also an inexplicable stubborness, now doubling-down on his previous bad bet by lashing out at Hoffman and his earnest supporters, scolding them as "misinformed" on Fox last-night. How is this any different than Team Obama's condescension towards a lot of these same people when they opposed his spendthrift socialist schemes... the same ones Scozzafava -and apparently the RNC and Newt- are now basically acquiescing to? Such inflexibility from as clever a political strategist as Gingrich -while his career goes down a deep, dark hole- suggests that's Newt's under orders... was dispatched by the RNC... and they're all going-down with the USS Scozzafava now.If the Hoffman surge continues -and he wins the election- look for Newt to be a spent political force... done. He's really starting to piss-off the resurgent Reaganite wing of the party now... where's the growth in that?
They'd possibly forgive -even admire- him if he had the courage to admit his error and back off... but it looks like Gingrich has decided to fight this one right-to-the-end alongside such bonehead RINOs as Susan Collins. Hey Newt -seriously- did you bump your head in the shower?
Dan at Riehl World View once saw the possiblity of a Gingrich-Palin ticket in 2012... but not anymore... not after this episode. And here's a warning shot across Newt's bow as he arrived at a Virginia book-signing event- only to be greeted by angry protesters with signs such as "Newt=RINO" -here-
Some on the right fear a weakening of the GOP in the run-up to vital midterm elections next year -as Newt implies- but I see the opposite. What a perfect opportunity to force the misguided GOP leadership towards conservative principles that provide voters with a true antidote to Obamamania... it'll be all teed-up for Reagan II after Carter II is done looting the country.
The timing couldn't be better, just before the 2010 election cycle starts in earnest... sure beats having 3rd parties split the conservative vote in a mutiny next fall, eh? NOW is the time to send a message to the RNC... and before they start prepping the next Ford or McCain for defeat in 2012.

This all certainly has major implications outside of NY-23... Stacy McCain:
Doug Hoffman is a sworn opponent of ObamaCare. If a guy like that wins, in an underdog third-party bid where nobody gave him a snowball's chance two weeks ago, what's the message?
Now watch Sarah Palin emerge a huge winner here for her principled and brave endorsement of Hoffman- she doesn't need her side to win as badly as Gingrich does, and Hoffman will likely run next fall anyway, regardless. Palin's shown what values she stands for... and they've nothing to do with being a toady for a GOP that nominates and funds such ludicrous "Republicans" as Dede Scozzafava.
Is 'Cuda the only one with a full set around here?
