Authorities have charged an 18-year-old man with fatally shooting a pregnant teenager whose infant son was delivered by doctors in an emergency procedure.

Prosecutors on Sunday charged Timothy Jones, 18, with first-degree murder in the Aug. 16 shooting death of Charinez Jefferson, according to Chicago police.

Jones, of the 6300 block of South Rockwell Street, is expected to appear before a judge Monday afternoon.

Police didn't say how they linked Jones to the young mother's slaying, but one police source said that Jones -- who has a recent burglary conviction, according to court records -- was a "stick-up man" well known to area police.

Police said Charinez Jefferson was walking with a group of friends in the 3000 block of West 64th Street at about 10:35 p.m. when a gunman got out of a car and ran up, firing, said News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.

"One of them yelled, 'He's got a got a gun,' and everyone scattered, Gaines said.

Jefferson was found lying on the street with gunshot wounds to her body and head, said Fire Department spokesman Will Knight. When paramedics arrived, she was in full cardiac arrest.

Jefferson was later pronounced dead at the hospital, but doctors quickly decided to perform emergency surgery to deliver the baby, hospital officials said.

The baby boy remained in critical condition, authorities said.
