A 13-year-old boy who was shot as he played basketball at a South Side park has died at an area hospital, authorities said this morning.
Darius Brown was shot in the chest at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday at Metcalfe Park in the 4200 block of South State Street in the Bronzeville neighborhood, according to Chicago police.
The critically-injured boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
Police said the boy, of the 4300 block of South Michigan Avenue, was shooting hoops in the park, when a gunman inside a car heading south on State Street opened fire, striking the boy once in the chest. Despite the dozens of children present at the park, no one else was struck.
Police don't believe Darius was the intended target.
Family members told WGN-TV that Darius would have entered 8th grade at the nearby Holy Angels School.
"He was playing basketball like he do everyday," his older sister, Paris Morrison, told WGN.
No arrests had been made in the shooting. Police didn't have a description of the car or the gunman. Basically...it will probably go forever unsolved...
