Kite - Stand Back

"Didn't you know?"

Indie-electro Swedish duo are back with a specially recorded track for the music event “Arvika Festivalen.” I’m always interested in what they’re doing, even if I wasn’t all that impressed with their last EP. This track is a kind of rebound for them in my eyes. Even on the first listen, I was taken by its sweeping (yet experimental) melodies. There are places, and maybe it’s just me, where it reminds me of the second part of the We Are The World chorus (you know, the "there's a choice we're making" part). That’s a strange comparison, I know, but it really jumped out at me. Amidst the slightly eerie electronics and surging bed of synths, I also get sort of an electro pop camp singalong vibe from it. I know, I know. I’m just full of weird comparisons today. It’s no Kumbaya (thank god!), but it’s got that big, sing-it-together-next-to-a-campfire feeling.

Kite - A Little More Time

We're the people that have it all"

Kite just released their third EP, called (quite creatively) III. As a whole, I don't like it as well as the other two, but it's always a treat to hear new material from these guys. A Little More Time has the catchiest hook on the entire EP, and even then it's not a knock-you-out sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs chorus. Kite's brand of electro is a little subtler... more mysterious and out there. Sometimes I wish they'd just go all out pop, but that's not really the purpose of this duo. Singer Nicklas Stenemo gets to do that already in Melody Club. Regardless, the icy electro found here is a great example of their overall sound and gets better as it goes on, building into something quite majestic by the end.

Kite - Jonny Boy

"Last night I was out clubbing with Jonny Boy"

Kite, my favorite Swedish duo, is back! They've been pulling a Robyn for the last couple of years, releasing a string of EPs in lieu of a full album. Jonny Boy is the lead single from their third EP, and although I don't think it's as strong as past singles, it's always a treat to hear these guys. Nicklas Stenemo, the vocalist, remains one of my favorite singers in music today. And although this sound is pretty far from his former band, The Mo, he's developed a unique vocal style that defines Kite as an experimental pop project to watch. Jonny Boy is more hypnotic than hit, but it rewards repeated plays. The incessant synth riff, which reminds me of whistling, is the star of the show and the earworm that'll keep you coming back. I can't wait to hear the rest of the EP. These guys haven't disappointed yet.
