Top 50 Singles of 2010: 45-41

45. The Dirty Disco - Sista!

One of my list’s newer bands, these guys burst on the scene in the best possible way with this rock/electro/glam/hybrid.

44. Hurts - Stay

The first of several songs on the countdown from the group formerly known as Daggers. This is a big, dramatic ballad done right.

43. Example - Last Ones Standing

It’s all about that thundering opening. He found a way to make what can be a niche sound into something stadium-filling. His best single.

42. Tove Styrke - White Light Moment

The Swedish Idol alum proves that she’s the coolest of the cool with this stately electro anthem. Best thing she’s done by far.

41. Marina & The Diamonds - I Am Not A Robot

So good it was released twice. This delicate, icy ballad pushes “quirky” to just the right level. I love it when it takes off at the end.

The Dirty Disco - White Room

"You are gonna have to treat my mental health"

After the success of Sista!, the Dirty Disco have released the video to their second single, the equally fantastic White Room. I love this band's DIY style. It's all limited budget, sure, but they make the most of it. From the costumes to the performance to the imagery, this is a band who knows exactly where they're going. In a lot of ways, they're like Scissor Sisters' brasher, more in-your-face cousin. Here's hoping they're in store for a similar level of success. Since I'm posting the video above, I thought it would be fun to post a remix below. Only this isn't a normal remix. It's a mash-up of the song with Penguin Prison's brilliant track, The Worse It Gets. Very cool, especially since I posted that song awhile back. The two work surprisingly well together.

The Dirty Disco - Vulture

"I'm burning up and now I want you more and more"

I've made it my business to keep up with The Dirty Disco, one of a handful of new bands that are going to make 2010 very special. Their first single, the stomping Sista, did well on the dance charts, and now the band are inviting you to hear (and download) a new track called Vulture. It's in remix form, and I'm not one for remixes, but I'll make an exception for this track. I'm dying to hear the original, as this offers a nice teaser for what's to come. Buoyed by swirling synths and a propulsive energy throughout, Vulture takes a simple melody and blasts it into space. They've teased another new song on their site, describing it as a "Fleetwood Mac stadium number." That gets me way excited. I love bands with a bit of variety to their sound. At this rate, the debut album could be up their with Scissor Sisters' first one. Download this track for free by clicking the arrow in the soundcloud link.

The Dirty Disco - Sista!

"Sista, you're making me feel like I've got something worth living for"

Sometimes a band is birthed into the world fully-formed with a sound and image all their own. Without any corporate fiddling, The Dirty Disco have managed to construct something that's as polished and professional as it is artsy and avant garde. With this type of band, it's important to have a dynamic frontman, and they certainly have one in lead singer Adam. He's (and I mean this in the best possible way) an absolutely bat-shit crazy performer. Add to that a sound that's half Gaga, half The Ark, and I was converted into a major fan about ten seconds into the song. Sista! mixes glam, electro, punk, and pop into a perfect cocktail. White Room, another song on their myspace, may be even better. Rather than post an mp3, I thought it was important to embed the music video, because this is a visual band if I've ever seen one. Like all of my favorite artists, they put a lot of effort and thought into their image. I've also attached their cover of Florence & The Machine's terrific Rabbit Heart, which is tweaked into a dramatic electro opus. The single is out on the 22nd of this month, followed by an album sometime in the future. It can't come quickly enough.
