Rise of the Planet of the Apes Snags PETA Award

Director Rupert Wyatt‘s movie imparts message of compassion with animal-friendly special effects.

When it came time to cast Rise of the Planet of the Apes, director Rupert Wyatt chose to use groundbreaking computer-generated imagery (CGI) to portray the apes in his film, rather than using abused ape "actors" as other much-criticized films have. "We wanted to tell our story without using live apes for any number of reasons," he explained in his presentation at this year's Comic-Con. "It would be a cruel irony to tell the story of the exploited and repressed and use live apes to do so." Wyatt's compassionate decision has earned him PETA Asia’s Proggy Award for Most Animal-Friendly Feature Film. PETA's Proggy Awards ("Proggy" stands for "progress") recognize animal-friendly achievements in commerce and culture.

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes reminds viewers that animals are feeling beings who deserve compassion, and its stunning use of CGI shows that there's no need to subject apes to the stress of filmmaking," says PETA U.S. Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. "Rupert Wyatt's methods back up PETA's message that apes should be protected and respected."

Great apes who are used in movies are forcibly taken from their mothers shortly after birth in a process that causes irreversible psychological harm to both the mother and her baby. The young apes are physically and psychologically abused during training to ensure that they will perform confusing, unnatural behaviors on command. By the time apes reach approximately 8 years of age, they are too strong to be safely handled and are often discarded at appalling roadside zoos or other substandard facilities, where they may languish for decades.

Geneva Cruz Named the Philippines’ Sexiest Vegetarian

Singer and actress Geneva Cruz has been crowned the Philippines' Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity for 2011 after a fierce, month-long battle that recently ended at PETAAsiaPacific.com.

Geneva narrowly beat out Delara frontwoman and TV personality Lougee Basabas for the title. Other popular contenders included actors Yasmien Kurdi, Chin-Chin Gutierrez, and Raymond Bagatsing, actress Alicia Mayer, and international stars Natalie Portman, Hayden Panettiere, Russell Brand, and Leona Lewis.

Geneva has appeared on the covers of several magazines, including FHM, Uno, and Maxim. Her fame grew after the album that she released with pop group Smokey Mountain went double-platinum. Not long after that, her first solo album, I Like You, went platinum. She recently performed at a sold-out show on Valentine’s Day.

Geneva has been vegetarian since she was 15 and made the decision to switch to a compassionate diet after she interacted with animals in their natural environment while filming a shampoo commercial. "[We] were in this location in Palawan where all the animals were just roaming free! Free! All I had to do was feed one of them and say 'Natural!' We kept doing that, take after take. … I couldn't take it anymore. Not after that." Now a staunch vegan, Geneva says, "For me, being vegan is not about the diet. It's really about my love for all creatures."

"There's no easier way to put passion in your life than to put compassion in your diet," says PETA Asia Vice-President of International Operations Jason Baker. "Geneva knows that going vegetarian is the best thing that you can do for animals, the Earth, and your health. Plus, she's living proof that being vegan keeps you slim and sexy."

The complete list of vegetarian celebrities who were in the running in this year's poll is available at PETAAsiaPacific.com.

Pinoy Celebrities Among Asian Contenders in PETA’s Annual ‘Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity’ Poll

Recognizing their contribution in spreading the awareness in protecting the animals and the benefits living in a veggie lifestyle, here are the Pinoy contenders for the sexiest list.

FHM cover girls Alicia Mayer and Geneva Cruz, kapuso star Yasmien Kurdi, and TV personality Lougee Basabas are solidly in the running among Asian contestants in People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia's annual Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity contest on PETAAsiaPacific.com. Other contenders from the Philippines include models Isabel Roces and Raya Mananquil and actors Chin-Chin Gutierrez, Juliana Palermo, Carlos Agassi, and Raymond Bagatsing.

Top vote-getters from outside the continent include singers Anthony Kiedis (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Leona Lewis; actors Hayden Panettiere, Natalie Portman, Milo Ventimiglia, Maggie Q, and Tobey Maguire (aka Spider-Man); Taiwanese singer and actor Barbie Hsu, who played Shan Cai in the hit TV drama Meteor Garden; and fighting champion Jake Shields.

Why are more and more trendsetters choosing to go vegetarian? Healthy vegetarian diets can help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and strokes. Plus, meat-eaters are nine times more likely to be obese than vegans are, making a vegetarian diet the easiest way to stay slim, fit, and sexy.

"When you look at the more than 300 gorgeous celebrities in this year's poll, it's clear that there can be no bones about it—a vegetarian diet makes you beautiful, inside and out," says PETA Asia Vice President of International Operations Jason Baker. "After all, going vegetarian is the best thing that you can do for animals, the Earth, and yourself. Plus, everyone knows that there's nothing sexier than someone who exudes both passion and compassion."

The poll runs through June 23.

JUSTIN BIEBER PROMOTES POUND PUPS IN SECOND PETA AD

Teen Sensation Justin Bieber is speaking out once again in support for PETA's continues campaign in spreading in the importance of adopting animals from animal shelters!

Justin Bieber's recent hit single "U Smile" not only has his legions of fans smiling but also has homeless dogs wagging their tails and homeless cats purring. That's because the pop music phenom—whose concert tour hits Manila on May 10—is the star of a new PETA ad that promotes adoptions from animal shelters. The ad was shot by renowned celebrity photographer Cliff Watts.

"It's really important that people adopt," said Bieber. "I really encourage going out to an animal shelter or a place where you can get a dog who has been abandoned or doesn't have a home."

Buying an animal from a pet store or a breeder robs a homeless animal of his or her chance at finding a good home. The less fortunate never even make it to a safe haven; they are left to fend for themselves on the streets, where they are often subjected to abuse by cruel people or succumb to starvation, disease, or injuries.

Bieber's numerous awards include the American Music Awards' Artist of the Year, and he recently released an acoustic version of his breakthrough album called My World Acoustic. He joins a growing list of celebrities—including Lea Michele, Kellan Lutz, Yasmien Kurdi, Pink, Maggie Q, Borgy Manotoc,—who have teamed up with PETA to help animals.

'SUGAR' SHANE MOSLEY: "Dogfighting Is for Cowards. Don't Do it." New PETA Ad

Boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley are both ready to display their punching power on the ring on May 7, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (Manila Time - May 8) but before the big event, "Sugar" Shane Mosley is speaking out against Dogfighting in a new PETA campaign in which he poses in the ring alongside the words:

"I Choose to Fight. Dogs Don't. Dogfighting Is for Cowards. Don't Do it."
Mosley explains, "My opponents and I know that when we step into the ring, we choose to be there and that if we don't come out on top, we can at least walk away. Dogfighting isn't like that." He concludes, "Dogfighting is dirty, it's cruel, and it's a loser's game."

Dogfighting is a vicious blood sport that leaves animals mangled and maimed. Even though it is illegal in the Philippines, dogfighting continues to thrive and is kept hidden from public view. PETA has seen dogs after they were forced to fight—they are left ripped apart, bloody, soaked in urine, unable to walk, and covered with cuts, bruises, and scars. The "losers" of these fights are often killed by their handlers.

Mosley joins a growing list of athletes and other celebrities—including Tito Ortiz, Ron Artest, Michael Strahan, Mac Danzig, Carey Hart, and many more—who have teamed up with PETA to speak out against animal abuse.

Alicia Mayer is Drop Dead Gorgeous in New PETA Ad

Filipina actor Alicia Mayer has "bared" the truth behind the cruel meat industry in more ways than one. That's because Mayer didn't pull any punches when she agreed to shoot a brand-new pro-vegetarian ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia. In the ad, Mayer is lying completely naked—seemingly lifeless—on a steel table and next to the caption "Meat Belongs in the Morgue, Not on Your Table. Go Vegetarian!" The stunning ad was shot by ace photographer Raymund Isaac for Portfolio Studio and takes direct aim at the meat industry.

"I'm challenging Filipinos to really think about what 'meat' is," says Mayer. "Eating flesh means eating the corpse of a tortured animal who did not want to die. I'm encouraging kind consumers to give vegetarianism a try."

Mayer gained widespread adoration for her part in the cast of the comedy show Lagot Ka … Isusumbong Kita and for her roles on the soap opera Saang Sulok ng Langit and First Time. She has played the role of Rhea on the Filipino-Malaysian soap opera Muli; served as one of the hosts of Eat Bulaga, the longest-running noontime variety show in Philippine TV history; and graced the cover of FHM magazine.

Animals who are raised and killed for meat, dairy products, and eggs endure immeasurable cruelty and are denied everything that is natural and important to them. More than 750 million animals are slaughtered for their flesh every year in the Philippines. On factory farms, cows, pigs, and chickens are kept in crowded, filthy enclosures, which are often so small that the animals are unable to lie down comfortably. Many animals are forced to stand amid their own urine and feces.

Cows are routinely branded, dehorned, and castrated without being given any painkillers. Pigs are castrated, and their tails and teeth are cut or broken off—also without any pain relief. Chickens are drugged and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under their own weight. Birds' throats are cut while they are still conscious, and many birds are scalded to death in defeathering tanks.

In addition to being cruelty-free, a diet that excludes meat, eggs, and dairy products can lower the risk of heart disease (one of the Philippines' top killers), cancer, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and acne in adults as well as allergies, ear infections, and juvenile-onset diabetes in children. Ninety percent of Filipinos are lactose-intolerant, and avoiding dairy products can help people's bodies work more efficiently. Numerous physicians and nutritionists agree that the best way to prevent heart disease as well as multiple other conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, and cancer, is to eat a diet high in fiber, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A healthy vegetarian diet can also help anyone stay slim.

The production of meat and dairy products also contaminates the water and soil with animal waste. Worldwide, farmed animals produce 13 billion metric tons of excrement a year—that's 48 times as much as the world's human population produces. Each day, animal agriculture consumes 2.5 trillion liters of water—enough for every person in the world to take eight showers.

Animal grazing has been responsible for loss of topsoil and eventual desertification in many parts of the world. The animals destroy the land's protective vegetation. Then wind removes the soil and converts formerly productive rangeland into desert. Forest lands in China and South America are being destroyed to clear space for grazing or to grow food for farmed animals.

A recent United Nations report concluded that a global shift toward a vegan diet is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change.

"The evidence is clear," says Jason Baker, PETA Asia's vice president of international operations. "The best thing that people can do for animals, the planet, and themselves is go vegetarian."

Mayer joins a host of international stars—including Pamela Anderson, Natalie Portman, Sir Paul McCartney, Maggie Q, and Barbie Hsu—who have kicked the meat habit.
