NATO Chief Already Looking to Slink-Away from Aimless Debacle in Libya

"We have to realize that
there is no military solution"

After weeks of making statements that closely resemble Obama's hollow platitudes and wishful thinking on Libya  (i.e. Gaddafi "increasingly isolated", "walls closing in", "optimistic" that he'll "eventually" go, etc) but at the same time doing little effective to bring any of that about, the line emanating today from NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen is that the military alliance should not be expected to defeat Muammar Gaddafi on the battlefield, ever...

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has warned it will be necessary to find a political solution to the conflict in Libya.

As heavy fighting raged around the city of Misrata on Sunday, Rasmussen said he was very optimistic that Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi would lose his grip on power.

"We have stopped Gadhafi in his tracks. His time is running out. He's more and more isolated," said Rasmussen.

However, speaking the news network CNN Rasmussen added that military power alone would not end the conflict.

"First of all, we have to realize that there is no military solution. We will need a political solution to break the stalemate," he said.

The Danish PM also noted that rebels are running out of supplies in their lone western outpost of Misrata... small wonder, with Gaddafi flying light aircraft right under NATO's noses on the way to-and-from their destruction of the city's lone fuel depot.

One might expect that a large port town like Misrata could be easily re-supplied by sea... and that certainly would have been the case had not Gaddafi already succeeded in mining the harbor while again violating the farcical No-Fly Zone with ease, this time employing low-flying helicopters in false-flag Red Cross and Red Crescent livery.

Of course, the NATO alliance has never been committed to victory in Libya. That -along with the fact nobody seems to know who the rebels are, exactly- is more than enough reason to have never gotten involved in the first place.

Western leaders purport to be primarily protecting Libyan civilians from the pro-Gaddafi forces' vengeful, savage ways, but they can't even seem to fulfill that level of tepid, politically-metered ambition: Yes, NATO has inflicted substantial material damage on the regime, but they also erroneously bombed rebel tanks and troops whilst failing utterly to prevent pro-Gaddafi guns, rockets, planes and helicopters from pounding Misrata right into dust.

As for the hapless civilians we endeavored to spare from all this, life in the midst of Misrata's ongoing destruction is understandably said to be steeped in constant fear and terror: one told CNN "Oh my God, it's like a like a horror movie!" with hospital emergency rooms packed with burned, amputated, and otherwise disfigured victims who suddenly found themselves on the receiving end of the Brother Leader's random shelling: "It has become an operation of revenge".

And that's not all he's been getting away with while NATO snoozes: Amnesty International has already accused the hyper-brutal Gaddafi regime of war crimes up to and including the use of internationally-banned cluster bombs on civilian targets. Others report Tripoli regularly sending Viagra-fueled rape squads to the front when moving on urban areas.

Just when it sounds like things couldn't get any worse, there's at least 10 tons of mustard gas left sitting in a warehouse near the Gaddafi birthplace/hometown of Sirte...

Obam's Razor: "What's the Most RADICAL Explanation for Recent US Action in Libya?"

WWII Germany's Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop was widely despised in diplomatic circles as well as by many leading Nazis of the day. Most considered him a vain, ill-mannered, unintelligent opportunist: Benito Mussolini's FM Count Ciano quipped "You only have to look at the shape of his head to see that he has a small brain."

Yet the charmless dullard was a favorite of Hitler's... and for one simple reason: the Fuhrer always looked well upon those who proposed the most radical solution to a given problem, even if not adopted as policy: Ribbentrop deduced this early-on, and exploited it to the fullest. Seems the boss had major transformations to bring about, and with some sense of urgency...

Today in 2011 America, political observers struggle mightily to get a grip on the fuzzy logic and towering hypocrisy in Obama purporting he was compelled to attack government assets in Libya -even if producing a stalemate insufficient to remove Gaddafi from power- in order to spare civilian lives and "Mosques"... yeah, he said that.

Moving to protect the lives of Egyptians, Kurds, Iranians, Yemenis, Syrians, Bahrainis, or any oppressed Christians and their burning churches throughout the perpetually-barbaric Middle East is different, somehow... if you're left standing there scritching yer cranium, you're surely not the only one.

But much as Occams' Razor instructs us to follow the most simple/obvious explanation to any mystery -that which assumes the least, positive or negative- let us apply Obam's Razor -'what's the most radical explanation'- to bring forth some needed  answers regarding recent US bombing of Libyan government forces.

As for minimizing "assumptions", no worries: after watching this power-drunk regime shred American society for two years straight now, anybody with a pulse and at least one functioning eye and/or ear can tell you that extending Team Obama the benefit of the doubt is assuming way, way too much- odds far better on the dark side.

For example, what's the most sinister Leftist rationale imaginable for the Dems' insane 2008-2009 federal spending orgy? Seems only the most radical squares with reality: a stealth Cloward-Piven strategy. Sadly, much like 1940's Germany, America now finds itself saddled with our own racially-obsessed, narcissistic megalomaniac... and he's trying to ram-through sweeping changes in a real big rush, too.

Monday I found myself in rare agreement with Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky) on matters of foreign policy when he said "we don't know who these people are" in Benghazi.

But does Obama?
If he does, is he quietly supporting Islamist forces while he schmoozes political donors and scarfs still more lobster in Manhattan?

And are war supporters Bill Kristol and John Kerry really this naive...?

The Spectator (UK)

The unsettling truth is that the rebel leadership is dubious at best- and with this habitually dishonest White House now admitting they've detected "flickers" of an Al Qaeda presence in Libya... what's the reality?

What if Gaddafi is right when he asserts AQ has had a significant hand in the uprising?  The head of NATO seems to think so- maybe it's a good thing the Devil-We-Know is still chasing them off the battlefield until we find out just what -and who- we're bargaining for here.

IMHO, it is possible if not probable that AQ are there, and it's hard to imagine US intelligence -and thus the President- not knowing it: Al Qaeda publicly endorsed the rebels, and reportedly already made off with a jackpot of Libyan surface-to-air missiles in the opening days of the uprising (but that's cool, now that we're on the same side and all...)

Is Obama aiding and abetting a stealth
Islamist agenda in the Middle East?

Just look at how it's going down- and you tell me:

-Filanofiles

"Mosques destroyed," the president said, supported his argument for air strikes. Churches are being destroyed daily in the Muslim world, but the U.S. does not intervene...

As a senator, Barack Obama had no interest in preventing Saddam Hussein from filling mass graves. He vocally opposed our going into Iraq. That was then...

It is surely laudable for the U.S. to stand against massacres. Now, however, it seems that the leader of the Libyan rebels is one who fought against the U.S. in Afghanistan. Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi was taken prisoner in Pakistan. He also recruited two dozen jihadis to fight the Americans in Iraq...

Should we be supporting people who have Americans' blood on their hands? Intelligence estimates tell us that nearly one in five of the jihadis we fought against in Iraq came from Libya.

President Obama's speech to the nation raised as many questions as it answered. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs were not consulted, but the Arab League was.

So was the UN. This is the same UN that applauded Gaddafi's wild rants in New York just last fall. It is the same body that elected Libya to its Human Rights Council....

It was surely shocking to millions of Americans when Barack Obama bowed to Saudi King Abdullah.

Even more shocking, however, was Mr. Obama's selection of Egypt's Al Azhar Mosque as the venue for his 2009 speech to what he called "the Muslim world." The Al-Azhar mosque in Cairo, says Dr. Zuhdi Jassser, a moderate American Muslim, "has served as a platform for 'Islamism' around the world, hatching the Muslim Brotherhood in the early 20th century."

So now we have a U.S. intervention in Libya that can only benefit rebels with known ties to jihadists and whose leaders have killed Americans. This all comes from an administration that refuses even to mention radical Islam as a possible threat to our nation...

What Libya's 'Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution' Does in His Spare Time...

When he's not trying on new outfits
or shelling protesters with naval artillery,
Moammar Gaddafi likes to design cars...

Seriously: meet the Libyan Rocket...
billed as "World's Safest Car"...

Your author is a lifetime car nut and student of automotive design, so fwiw: although a bit busy and sci-fi for my taste...
hey, there's been worse.

Very pointy, if you're into that- lol:

Looks kinda like a 2025 Honda Civic or something...

The appalling fatality rates on Libyan roads supposedly inspired Gaddafi to offer his ideas on how to best save lives, thus the safety theme -replete with zillions of airbags and "active defense system"- of the Libyan Rocket.  Powered by a 3.0L V-6 engine, a 7-second 0-60mph figure is claimed for the large-ish 217" sedan.

Although slated for production in 2009, the project was stillborn: only these two prototypes have been built by Italian engineering firm Tesco TS and the Tripoli factory that was to produce the car was never completed...

And if you didn't catch the ABC/BBC interview yesterday: Gaddafi makes Baghdad Bob look like a piker- but do note the laughter when asked if he'll step down because Obama and others told him to- as stated here yesterday, the only way this one's going out is feet-first...

Any chance he still wins this, though? Analysis -here-

Libya Update: Gaddafi Bombs Own Capitol as Loyalists Shoot Anything that Moves (video)

'Leader of the Revolution' appears on Libyan state TV
while bodies pile-up in the streets of Tripoli... Libya update

Libyan TV

Anyone -like myself- wondering if Muammar Gadaffi's warped son Saif al Islam Gaddafi was just blustering on Libyan TV -wagging his finger while threatening "a river of blood" emanating from "civil war" fought to "the last bullet"- got their answer last night in the form of a gruesome ongoing massacre inflicted by military/security/militia loyalists upon their own countrymen...

Saif al Islam Gaddafi

There's reportedly been bombing of funeral processions and civilian areas of the capitol by fighter jets, while on the ground militias and security personnel are enforcing a de facto 24-hr shoot-on-sight curfew... even sniping at ambulances. Conditions in the Libyan capitol Tripoli -the regime's traditional stronghold- were described by fresh refugees to Malta as "warlike-"

This morning brings gruesome reports of bodies just laying around residential neighborhoods of Tripoli, many had bled to death on the spot- small wonder the regime's enforced an all but total news blackout and crashed telephone as well as most internet service.

The battle for Libya's second city though -Benghazi- appears lost for now for Gaddafi, with any military units that didn't withdraw now deputizing townspeople and arming the protesters. Even missiles had been fired at a funeral here, but there is currently no government resistance in this sector as rebels patrol the town allied with army defectors and their weapons.

Colonel Gaddafi ON THE RUN: 'Mad Dog of the Middle East' Reportedly Flees Tripoli...

Libya's second city Benghazi
appears lost as troops retreat

Daily Mail (UK)-
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is believed to have fled the capital Tripoli after anti-government demonstrators breached the state television building and set government property alight.

Protesters appear to have gained a foothold in Tripoli as banks and government buildings were looted while demonstrators have claimed they have taken control of the second city Benghazi.

It is thought up to 400 people may have died in the unrest with dozens more reported killed in Tripoli overnight as protests reached the capital for the first time and army units were said to have defected to the opposition.

Pressure is building on the deranged terrorist nut Reagan famously called "the mad dog of the Middle East": with reports of 350+ dead, the military retreating to their compounds, mystery Libyan jets landing in Malta, and today the Justice Minister -for one- resigning in protest of Gaddafi's murderous hand.

This video has been snuck out of Benghazi, which reportedly just fell to anti-Gaddafi forces...

Team Obama Knew of Lockerbie Bomber's Release for Months

As forseen by Gateway Pundit, Downing Street is confirming in the face of disingenuous "shock and disappointment" from the Obama Administration that they in-fact knew of the oil/prisoner-release deal with Libya right from the start- and there was no American objection to it when they had the chance at various stages throughout the process.

Obama's boundless hubris and warped self-image that had him thinking he could bus-chuck Gordon Brown and not be called on it. After Brown's schoolgirl-swooning in their joint British presser -even after Obama had treated him like a dog in DC- the Dear Leader apparently thought he owned him.

But as the Obama
mojo completely evaporates, he's going to have to find a new M.O. that doesn't involve people being intimidated by The One's very presence- because few are at this point.

Many Americans, Brits, and others with moral clarity were rightfully outraged when the Libyans said the release of this mass-murderer was connected to future trade deals with the UK- but they really went ballistic when photos emerged of Libyans waving Scottish flags as they greeted Abdel Baset al-Megrahi upon his arrival to a hero's welcome from Col Gadaffi in Tripoli.

Taken aback by western public reaction, the habitually dishonest Obama Administration feigned outrage and surprise- maybe Pitt and Clooney should hook them up with some acting lessons, because these clowns didn't fool anybody.

Alas, since the Obama Administration has put such effort into not honoring the victims of the 9/11 attacks and other American heroes, maybe we should have expected them to acquiesce to the release of such terrorist scum... one directly responsible for the deaths of 169 Americans.

But lying about it -at the expense of our greatest ally, no less- then getting caught will only bring yet more political ruination to this bungling crew of diplomatic incompetents. Small wonder then that Obama's approval ratings are in a death-spiral.. and where's that goofy "reset" button when you really need it?

It's going to be hard to pass radical, unpopular legislation with approval numbers in the 30's-
